Learning Objectives
KNOWLEDGE: Functional structure of a computer. Binary arithmetic. Basic Software. Programming languages. Introduction to programming. Learning a programming language. Local networks and geographic networks, the Internet and its applications.
COMPETENCES: Acquire the basic concepts of computer science and a precise lexicon; know the operating principles of an electronic computer; have a logical basis for designing and building programs with a discreet mastery of the concept of algorithm and the ability to use basic linguistic tools.
Skills acquired at the end of the course:
know how to use a computer, especially in the statistical field, using software already available, but also to realize its own applications. Have a clear idea of programming activity.

Type of Assessment
Intermediate tests on hardware and software (30 questions each, with closed responses), programming test in the classroom.
Course program
The course starts with an introduction to the computer structure. Then the main concepts relating to numbering systems are presented, with particular reference to binary arithmetic. The most important aspects of software are developed, with particular attention to what is used in the statistical field: operating systems, programming languages and statistical packages. Particular importance is given to networks: local and geographic, the Internet and its main applications.
The course ends with the programming part: introduction to programming and use of a language with classroom applications.
Content support will require students to follow the Laboratory activity (separate training activity of 3 CFUs).
