Bachelor Degree in Statistics

What Is Statistics?

Statistics is the science of learning from data, and of measuring, controlling, and communicating uncertainty; and it thereby provides the navigation essential for controlling the course of scientific and societal advances (Davidian and Louis, 10.1126/science.1218685).

Introduction
The degree program in Statistics provides students with a strong foundation in statistics and the broad skills to prepare them for advanced study in statistics or employment in industry and government. Upon completion of our program, students will be able to operate in various sectors. They can enter into the job market as qualified experts, to produce and manage information flows, to use computer systems to gather information and process it in order to obtain strategic directions, to correctly analyse and interpret the results from standard designed experiments, sample surveys, and observational studies. This programme is for you if you expect to use statistics in your professional work. You will develop the capacity to formulate and analyse problems and to interpret scientific evidence using appropriate statistical methodology. You will get good all-round mathematical knowledge together with the ability to experience more specialised results, methods and ideas.

After the graduation
A degree in Statistics provides access to the Master of Statistics and Data Science (LM-82) activated at the School of Economics and Management at the University of Florence. Other possible outcomes are the Master of Science in Computer Science (School of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences), Finance and Risk Management (LM-16), Design of sustainable tourism systems (LM-49) economic Sciences (LM-56).

Teaching and learning
The Statistics teaching program is des to provide students with a solid quantitative background, including linear algebra and calculus, conceptual understanding of elementary probability and mathematical statistics, skills in data analysis and interpretation, and a proficiency in statistical computing. These tools are required in order to apply methods and statistical models for the representation and measurement of economic, social, demographic, medical, and many other different phenomena. During the course, students are free to contact their Professors and have the opportunity to participate in research activities of the Department (examples: telephone interviews, field studies, etc.). To obtain the degree students must earn 180 credits (CFU).

Work experience opportunity
In an increasingly competitive job market, it is becoming more and more important to gain work experience whilst studying for your degree. This is the main reason why we provide our students the opportunity of an internship (not mandatory) at private or public companies.

Job opportunities
A degree in Statistics offers several placement opportunities, detectable in those work activities that require expertise in processing, management, analysis, and interpretation of data related to economic, corporate, social, medical, and many other phenomena.
Due to the transversality of statistics, it often happens to work in various fields (economic, medical, biological, social, industrial, etc.). This makes statistics a creative and stimulating field;
- The skills acquired in the graduate program (use of statistical methods and tools) are recognized as strategic skills in many working situations;
-  as we operate in a highly uncertain and unpredictable society, today more than ever,  governments, businesses, and citizens need reliable statistical information.

How to apply
Entry requirements
To be admitted, students need to take a self-assessment test, which aims to verify the necessary background knowledge, together with the ability and commitment to do well on the course. The test includes questions divided into three sections: elements of logic, verbal comprehension, and elements of mathematics. The test will be held at the beginning of each academic year and several times during the same academic year. Additional information about the test is available on the website of the School of Economics and Management at: Entry knowledge test

Scholarships and economic incentives
The Master of Science in Statistics is one of the courses of study "of particular national and community interest", for which MUR (Ministry of University and Research) has so far provided a special fund in order to pay taxes and other forms of economic incentive for students (RIMBORSI DELLE TASSE E AGEVOLAZIONI ECONOMICHE).
